Eight Directional Cuts as Kata

Key Points

Keep the ichimonji cuts level by rotating the blade slightly toward the ground as an aerofoil shape it rises as you swing it.


Rotate the hips and remain upright keep your weight evenly distributed.


This is a great warm up exercise, practice with different chiburi and noto

From a standing position


Step forward into Seigan no kamae perform


Cut 1) left to right nukitsuke


Furikaburi; then


Cut 2) downward kirioroshi to centre


Change stance right leg forward into Hidari waki no kamae sword in lower rear left and perform


Cut 3) upward left to right kirage at 45 degrees to above the right shoulder


Furikaburi then


Cut 4) downward right to left kesagiri at 45 degrees to outside the left knee


Furikaburi bring the sword to chudan on the left side, move the right leg to balance your weight in iaigoshi and perform


Cut 5) left to right yoko-ichimonji


Change stance left leg forward into Migi waki no kamae sword to lower rear right and perform


Cut 6) upward right to left kirage at 45 degrees to above the left shoulder


Furikaburi then


Cut 7) downward left to right kesagiri at 45 degrees to outside the right knee


Bring the sword to chudan on the right side, move the right leg forward to balance your weight in iaigoshi and perform


Cut 8) right to left yoko-ichimonji


Step back right leg into jodan no kamae

Step back left leg into chudan no kamae


Perform yoko chiburi

Perform gyakute noto
